NEVER GOING BACK

“We vow not to repeat our errors and  contribute to a Clean Slate plan.”
HOW NGB WORKS
NGB is a collaboration between Tribal Warrior, South Sydney Local Area Command and Corrective Services NSW.

Our Never Going Back (NGB) program is designed to successfully transition inmates back into the community and never reoffend. NGB was built upon the same principles of Tribal Warrior’s Clean Slate Without Prejudice (CSWP) program and supports the physical, mental, and emotional health of participants.

The program at this point, supports male inmates from Corrective Services NSW and in a culturally appropriate and supportive manner. The inmates are transported early in the morning from Corrective Services NSW on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings to participate in boxing at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) at 6am. Here, they join Tribal Warrior’s CSWP mentees, mentors and other community members, providing a strong connection to the local Aboriginal community in Redfern and surrounding suburbs.

After boxing, NGB participants help prepare breakfast for the CSWP mentees, clean up and provide general support to the CSWP mentors and mentees. Participants also have the opportunity to join CSWP mentees at language classes providing a further connection to culture and community.

In addition to the boxing routine and schedule, the Tribal Warrior team provides:
  • Connection to culture, community and family.
  • Intensive case management/mentoring.
  • Connection to culturally appropriate support services.
  • Opportunities to participate in education, skill development, pre-employment and community programs e.g. deckhand and coxswain courses for employment in the maritime industry.
  • Access to volunteering and community programs.
  • Guidance with housing and employment for post-release.
Tribal Warrior mentors continue to provide support to NGB participants once they re-enter the community.

NGB HISTORY

NGB began in 2015 following the success of Tribal Warrior’s CSWP program. Tribal Warrior and the local Redfern Police recognised the need to be proactive about supporting families who were impacted by crime and prison cycles. We believed there was a different approach to supporting individuals, and therefore their families, break the cycle of incarceration and make better choices influenced by culture, community and family.

The program name, Never Going Back, was selected to reflect the first participants on our program who vowed never to go back to jail and never reoffend again.

FEMALE INMATES - THE NEXT PHASE

The next phase of our NGB program includes the introduction of a female program. The women in our community are the heartbeat of our families and we want to support our mums, aunties, sisters, nieces, nans, cousins and friends make better life choices. We will be there for them.
